ATV
Tours and Back Road Adventures: Guided tours are available
at Sproat Lake and nearby areas year round or ask the Lakeshore
staff for directions for those who wish to explore on their own.
Rentals available off-site.
Backpacking
and Hiking: Excellent trails for every level, guided
or unguided, are accessible. The world famous West Coast Trail and
the Island Backbone Trail both have their terminus at Alberni Inlet.
Beachcombing:
Exceptional opportunities for this enjoyable pastime are provided
all along the west coast of Vancouver Island. Check out easily accessible
Long Beach, located just northwest of Ucluelet (see
map).
Bird
Watching and Wildlife Viewing: The varied terrain of
the Alberni Valley is home to a variety of wildlife including over
200 species of birds. JV Clyne Bird Sanctuary is the winter home
of the Trumpeter Swan.
Boating,
Canoeing and Kayaking: Motor boat, kayak, canoe and
paddle boat rentals are available at Lakeshore Campground and Cottages
to help you explore Sproat Lake's more than 100 kilometers (63 miles)
of shoreline.
Bungy
Jumping: There are several opportunities to practice
this sport including the first North American legal bungy bridge,
over the Nanaimo River Canyon. With 120,000 incident free jumps
and a 42 meter (140 feet) drop it’s guaranteed to be an electrifying
experience.
Caving:
Clayoquot Plateau Provincial Park has a variety of expert only and
unexplored caves while nearby Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park includes
a free 1.5 hour guided tour during the months of July and August.
Cycling
and Mountain Biking: Sproat Lake offers bike trails
for every level of enthusiast. Bike rentals are available off-site.

Diving:
Vancouver Island is recognized throughout the world as a premier
diving destination year round. Equipment rental and instruction
are available at a variety of locations in the area.
Fishing:
As one of the most popular activities in the area every requirement
for anglers of all ages and skill levels are met. There are a variety
of Derbies and all five species of salmon are present in the waters
of Alberni inlet. Sproat Lake and the Sproat River boasts Rainbow
Trout, Cutthroat, Kokanee and Steelhead fishing.
Golf:
The Hollies Golf Club and the Alberni Golf Course are both nearby
with a variety of tournaments held through the summer months. Rentals
and other amenities are available at both facilities.
Hang
Gliding and Para Gliding: Mount Irwin is suitable for
both hang gliding and para gliding. The Vancouver Island Hang Gliding
and Para Gliding Club lists this peak as one of its seven favored
spots to sail from.
Horseback
Riding: Hundreds of miles of unused logging
roads through old and second growth forests make this a rewarding
activity. Guided tours are available off site.
Rock
Climbing: There are several exceptional climbing areas
including nearby Mount Arrowsmith, easily reached from Highway 4.
It has five recognized routes to the summit, all considered good
climbs, ranging from class 3 to class 5 in difficulty.
Skiing,
Snowboarding and Snowshoeing: Nearby Mount Washington
is the premier site on Vancouver Island and is the second busiest
site, after Whistler/Blackcomb, in the province. The season is from
early winter to late spring and there are excellent cross country
and snowmobile runs on the mountain as well. Extensive amenities
are available at the ski lodge.

Storm
Watching: Often overlooked as an activity worth enjoying,
storm watching is an experience of the raw power of the elements
that can be safe and exciting. For a real rush take a trip to Long
Beach on the open coast, where the only thing between you and Japan
is water.
Surfing:
Long beach is the Canadian version of Maui and the waves are excellent,
often reaching 25 feet (see photo gallery). There are rentals and
lessons available at a variety of locations in Tofino.
Swimming:
Sproat Lake has exceptional swimming with warm clean water in the
summer months. Lakeshore Cottages and Campgrounds provides a variety
of amenities for the young and the young at heart.
Waterskiing:
Sproat Lake furnishes some of the best waterskiing on Vancouver
Island with all the amenities required provided by our resort including
boat launch, guest moorage and motor boat rentals.
Whale
Watching: This fun and educational activity has emerged
as one of the areas main attractions and the opportunities are abundant!
There’s much more than Orcas in these coastal waters. Harbor
porpoises, the Dall’s porpoise and the Pacific White-Sided
Dolphin swim with sea lions and seals. Look for Humpback, Minke
and Grey whales as well as many other marine mammals in this eco-tourist's
paradise.
